iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max: An Iterative Year
The iPhone 18 Pro is expected to look a lot like the iPhone 17 Pro. The changes reported so far are the kind you feel over a two or three year ownership window rather than in a hands-on demo: the A20 Pro chip built on a newer 2-nanometer process, a smaller Dynamic Island, an upgraded LTPO OLED panel, and a new main camera with a variable aperture that gives real control over depth of field for the first time on an iPhone.
There is also steady reporting about more Apple-designed silicon inside: a second-generation C2 modem and a new networking chip. Those matter less for spec sheets and more for battery life, which is where iterative iPhone years usually earn their keep.
The Foldable: Apple's First New iPhone Form Factor in Years
The most interesting device of the event is the one Apple has never shipped before. Reporting describes a book-style foldable, sometimes called iPhone Ultra in leaks, with a cover display around 5.5 inches and an inner display around 7.8 inches that unfolds to roughly iPad mini territory. Expected pricing starts near $2,000.
First-generation Apple hardware in a new category is historically a poor value buy and a fast depreciator on the used market. If you are price-sensitive, the foldable's real gift to you is different: it pulls attention and demand away from the slab iPhones you might actually want, which helps their street prices.
The Big Absence: No Standard iPhone 18 Until Spring
The most buyer-relevant rumor is about what is not coming. Multiple reports say Apple is splitting the iPhone lineup across two windows: Pro models and the foldable in September, then the standard iPhone 18, the budget 18e, and a second-generation iPhone Air in spring 2027.

Apple Watch Series 12, Ultra 4, and Maybe New AirPods
Two new Watch models are expected: the Series 12 and the Watch Ultra 4. Reporting on both is thinner than on the iPhones, which usually signals an iterative year. The current Series 11 lists at $399 and the Ultra 3 at $799, and both have been selling below list at authorized retailers all summer.
There is also a longer-shot rumor about new AirPods with outward-facing cameras for AI features. We would treat that one as a maybe at best. The AirPods Pro 3, current at $249, was refreshed recently enough that a successor this month would be a surprise.
