Should You Buy a Mac Now or Wait? The October 2026 Answer
The decision changed when Apple's M6 Mac mini and M5 Mac Studio went on sale in September. Those desktops no longer require waiting for a launch. The base MacBook Pro and iMac are different: their rumored successors have not been announced, and neither a date nor a price is guaranteed. Use the machine you need and the actual retailer offer, not the age of the chip alone, to decide.
What changed since the original August guide
Apple began selling the Mac mini with M6 or M5 Pro and Mac Studio with M5 Max or M5 Ultra on September 22. The older M4 mini and M4 Max Studio are refurbished alternatives in the TheresMac catalog. MacBook Air M5: Buy When You Need a Laptop
For school, office work, travel and light creative tasks, the M5 Air is the easy recommendation. It is fanless, portable and already released. A later Air refresh is possible, but Apple has not announced one, so an attractive current offer is more useful than a speculative date.

Base MacBook Pro M5: Decide by Urgency and Discount
Apple has not announced an M6 MacBook Pro, even though M6 silicon now exists in the mini. If you need the Pro display, ports or active cooling for work today, buy a well-priced M5. If your current computer is fine and the M5 offer is close to list price, waiting preserves the option to see what Apple announces next.
Treat any rumored release window or price as uncertain. A future MacBook might arrive later than expected, cost more, or change features you do not use. Compare the full configuration and return window, not just the chip generation.
MacBook Pro M5 Pro and M5 Max: Buy for a Known Workload
The current Pro and Max notebooks make sense when your projects need their memory, GPU capacity, sustained performance or screen. An OLED or touchscreen redesign has been discussed in reporting, but no future model's specification, timing or price is confirmed by Apple. If that screen would change your workflow and your existing machine is adequate, waiting is reasonable. Otherwise, buy the current configuration at a verified offer that fits your budget.
Mac mini: The M6 Is Here; the M4 Is a Refurbished Value Play
The base M6 starts at $899 from Apple with 16GB memory and 256GB storage. It brings stronger chip performance, Wi-Fi 7 and standard 2.5Gb Ethernet. The M5 Pro mini starts at $1,699 for more demanding work. Neither requires waiting for a release; check the retailer's current delivery estimate.

iMac M4: Buy the Screen-and-Computer Package You Need
The current iMac is an all-in-one choice: its display, speakers, camera and computer arrive together. An M6 successor has been rumored, but Apple has not announced it. If the all-in-one setup matters now, compare today's iMac offers. If your current setup works and a newer chip is more important than a near-term purchase, waiting is reasonable without assuming a launch date.
Mac Studio: The M5 Generation Is Available
The M5 Max Studio starts at $2,499 and the M5 Ultra at $5,499. These are current products for workflows that can use the extra GPU, memory capacity, connectivity and display support. Apple's most memory-heavy 512GB configuration is expected in late October, so verify the delivery promise if that specific build is essential.
The prior M4 Max and M3 Ultra generations belong in a refurbished comparison. A lower sticker price is meaningful only after checking memory, storage, condition and support terms against a current M5 build.
MacBook Neo: Buy for the Basics
The A18 Pro MacBook Neo remains the low-cost route into a new Mac laptop. It is best for browsing, documents and school tasks, not a substitute for a Pro notebook with large projects or specialist ports. Buy an available Mac when it solves a present need at a price you can verify. Wait when your current machine is adequate and the potential successor's features matter enough to you to tolerate an unknown date and price.
