Touchscreen OLED MacBook Pro: What to Expect From Apple's October 28 Launch

The MacBook Pro has never had a touchscreen or an OLED display. According to Bloomberg, both arrive in about ten days, alongside an M6 MacBook Pro, an M6 iMac and an OLED iPad mini. None of it is announced yet. Here is what has been reported, how firm each piece is, and which purchases are worth pausing for.

Reported, not announced. As of October 18, Apple has not confirmed any product, date or price in this article. Most of it comes from Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, whose recent October reporting proved accurate: he described the October 13 home launch before Apple announced it. We will replace this preview with confirmed details once Apple publishes them.

When and How Apple Will Announce

Bloomberg reported on October 8 that Apple would launch these products on or around Tuesday, October 27. In mid-October, Gurman added that Apple had begun inviting some media to "an all-day product launch experience on Oct. 28 in Los Angeles", naming the touchscreen MacBooks, the iPad mini and M6 Macs. Coverage describes hands-on sessions on the evening of the 27th and through the 28th rather than a livestreamed keynote, so expect press releases and online videos instead of a traditional event.

Shipping dates are unknown. Some reports have floated an early-November on-sale date, but we have not found a firm source for it. Plan for announcements late this month and deliveries some time after.

The Reported Lineup

The touchscreen OLED MacBook Pro. Bloomberg says the redesign stays in the MacBook Pro family in 14 and 16-inch sizes, rather than taking the "MacBook Ultra" name some earlier rumors used. The headline changes are the OLED panel, touch input in macOS and a Dynamic Island style cutout. Earlier reports also promised a thinner body; more recent coverage says Gurman now describes it as lighter, so treat thickness as unknown until Apple publishes dimensions. Reports say these models keep M5 Pro and M5 Max chips, so the redesign is about the screen and the chassis, not a new generation of performance.

The M6 MacBook Pro and M6 iMac. These are the quieter updates: the M6 chip, already shipping in the new Mac mini, comes to the base 14-inch MacBook Pro and the 24-inch iMac in their current designs.

The OLED iPad mini. Reports point to an OLED screen, a front camera moved to the landscape edge and new speakers. Gurman has estimated a price around $799, which he labeled his own estimate. That would be $200 above today's $599 iPad mini.

What Might It Cost?

No credible report gives a price for the OLED MacBook Pro. Reporting since March has expected it to cost more than today's models, because Apple raised prices when it brought OLED to the iPhone and the iPad Pro. Figures you may see, such as $2,499 for a 14-inch model, are outlets' arithmetic rather than sourced numbers.

What we do know is today's floor: the 14-inch MacBook Pro with M5 is $1,999 at Apple, and our price pages track the current M5 Pro and M5 Max models across retailers. If the OLED models sit above the current design rather than replacing all of it, today's MacBook Pro may stay on sale and become the better-value Pro.

Buy Now or Wait Ten Days?

Our Call by Product
If you are buyingOur callWhy
Base 14-inch MacBook Pro (M5)WaitAn M6 version is reported for the same launch
MacBook Pro with M5 Pro or M5 MaxWait unless you need it nowThe redesign could change prices and resale either way

Waiting costs little here because the announcements are days away and the deliveries may not be far behind. The exception is work: if a current Mac solves a paid problem today, a verified offer now beats a rumor. Our Advice

If you are shopping for a MacBook Pro, an iMac or an iPad mini, pause until Apple posts its announcements. Then decide on two things: whether OLED and touch improve your work enough to pay more, and whether the outgoing models get cheaper. Neither question can be answered from a rumor.

Everyone else can ignore the noise. The MacBook Air, Mac mini and Mac Studio are not part of this launch, so buy them on price as usual.
