iPad mini 8 vs iPad mini 7: Is the OLED Model Worth $100 More?

Updated

On October 26 Apple announced the iPad mini with A20 Pro, which we call iPad mini 8: an 8.5-inch OLED display in the same footprint, IP67 water and dust resistance, a front camera on the landscape edge and a thinner, lighter body. It starts at $699, $100 more than iPad mini 7 cost at Apple, and ships November 6. Apple no longer sells the mini 7, but retailers still have stock, so the choice comes down to what the new screen and durability are worth to you.

The short answer

If you read, take notes or travel with your iPad and want the best small screen, buy the mini 8: OLED, water resistance and a lighter body are worth $100. If price decides it, a new 128GB mini 7 at $499 or less is the value pick, because it does those same jobs well. Between $500 and $599, lean toward the mini 8. These are editorial thresholds, not observed offers.

A $100 Step at Every Capacity

Apple kept the same three capacities and raised each by $100. A cellular model still adds $150. The mini 7 prices below are Apple's last list prices before the new model replaced it, which is the fair starting point for judging a retailer discount.

The OLED Screen Is the Real Upgrade

The mini 8's 8.5-inch Super Retina XDR OLED replaces the mini 7's 8.3-inch LCD. Both are 326 pixels per inch, so text is equally sharp; the differences are brightness, contrast and black levels. Apple rates the new panel at 600 nits for everyday use and 1,200 nits peak for HDR, against 500 nits on the mini 7, with a 2,000,000:1 contrast ratio and a 1-nit minimum for reading in the dark. Thinner bezels make room for the extra 0.2 inch without changing the footprint.

For HDR video, comics, photos and reading at night, that is a visible improvement. Nano-texture glass to cut glare is optional on the 256GB and 512GB models. Apple's specifications do not list ProMotion for either model, so do not expect smoother 120Hz scrolling from the new one.

Which Models Get the Faster Chip

The A20 Pro is not the same chip in every mini 8. Apple's specifications give the 128GB and 256GB models a 5-core CPU and a single 16-core Neural Engine, and the 512GB model a 6-core CPU and a dual 16-core Neural Engine. All have a 7-core GPU. The mini 7 has a 6-core CPU and a 5-core GPU at every capacity. Apple's claims are "up to" figures against the previous generation:

Manufacturer claims from Apple's October 26, 2026 announcement, not independent TheresMac benchmarks. Apple describes the chip as having up to a 6-core CPU; expect smaller multithreaded and AI gains on the 128GB and 256GB models, which have one fewer CPU core and a single Neural Engine.

For reading, notes, browsing and video, the mini 7 is already fast, and the new chip will not change how those feel. The gains matter more for games, on-device AI features and heavier creative apps. If those are why you want a mini, the 512GB model is the one with the full chip.

The landscape camera is the practical change for video calls: on the mini 8 you are centered when the iPad sits sideways in a stand or keyboard case. IP67 means a drop in the bath or a spill in a bag is survivable, which matters for a tablet that travels. Cellular models move to Apple's C2 modem, which Apple says is up to 50 percent faster than the previous generation.

Your Apple Pencil Pro or USB-C Pencil works with both. Cases are a different story: the mini 8 is thinner and its camera has moved, so do not assume a mini 7 case will fit.

Which iPad mini Should You Buy?

Buy the mini 8 if you read in bed, watch HDR video, use the iPad in the kitchen, the bath or at the beach, or make video calls on it. The screen, water resistance and landscape camera are each easy to notice, and together they are worth the $100. Choose the 512GB model if games or AI features are the reason you are upgrading, since it is the only one with the 6-core CPU.

Buy a new mini 7 if a retailer has it at $499 or less for 128GB and you mostly read, browse and take notes; it does those jobs well for $200 less. Check that a listing is new rather than open-box or refurbished, and confirm the price in the cart.
