Mac mini M6 vs Refurbished M4: How Much Should You Save?
The new M6 Mac mini starts at $899. The M4 mini is now an older-generation refurbished choice in the TheresMac catalog. The useful question is not which chip wins a chart; it is whether a specific refurbished machine saves enough, with the same memory and storage, to make its warranty and condition tradeoffs worthwhile.
The short answer
For a comparable 16GB/256GB machine, we would choose a reputable refurbished M4 at $699 or less for everyday work. From $750 upward, the new $899 M6 is usually easier to justify. Between those prices, inspect the seller, warranty, return terms and the work you actually do. These are editorial thresholds, not observed refurb offers.
A $200 Saving Is a Different Decision from $100
Apple's current US starting price for the M6 mini is $899. Its 2026 starting price for the outgoing M4 was $799 before the new machine launched, but that old list price is not a current refurbished offer. Refurbished stock varies by seller, condition and configuration, so compare the actual listing with a new 16GB/256GB M6.
New M6, Apple list
$899
16GB memory and 256GB storage; check current retailer offers.
Example M4 refurb
$749
$150 saved. The new model is our default if warranty terms are similar.
Example M4 refurb
$699
$200 saved. Worth serious consideration for everyday work.
The $749 and $699 refurbished figures are illustrative editorial thresholds, not live prices or guarantees of stock. Taxes and shipping can change the final gap.
The $200 threshold is a judgment, not a measured value for M6 performance. It gives a general-purpose buyer enough savings to accept an older chip and a seller-dependent refurbishment process. If the M4 listing has more memory or storage, calculate the gap against the equivalent M6 configuration instead of comparing unlike base prices.
What the M6 Performance Headlines Actually Cover
Apple says the M6 mini can be up to 40% faster in CPU performance, up to twice as fast in graphics, and up to four times as fast in AI performance versus M4. Its examples also include up to 1.5× faster Excel calculations and up to 4.8× faster LLM prompt processing. These are different workloads; none is a blanket speedup for browsing, email or every creative app.
Apple's selected M6-versus-M4 maximum claims
M4 is the 100 baseline within each separate workload
Manufacturer claims from Apple's August 2026 announcement, not independent TheresMac benchmarks. Apple compared selected systems including an M4 with 32GB memory and 2TB SSD; these bars do not predict the speed of every 16GB/256GB pair.
An M4 mini with 16GB still handles ordinary web, office, study and photo organization work. The M6 has a stronger case when your time is spent in sustained graphics work, large local models or other demanding tasks that match Apple's tested workloads. If a particular app is mission-critical, look for independent testing of that app and configuration before assigning a dollar value to the claim.
There is also a trap in comparing “AI performance” with software eligibility. Apple lists macOS 27 Apple Intelligence support for Macs with M1 or later, so an M4 does not lose the software merely because M6 has more AI compute. Feature, language and regional availability can still differ.
The Differences You Will Notice Without a Benchmark
| Feature | Mac mini M6 | Mac mini M4 |
|---|---|---|
| CPU / GPU cores | 12 / 12 | 10 / 10 |
| Base memory / storage | 16GB / 256GB | 16GB / 256GB |
| Rear Thunderbolt | Three Thunderbolt 4 | Three Thunderbolt 4 |
| Wireless | Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6 | Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.3 |
| Standard Ethernet | 2.5Gb | Gigabit |
| Condition | New | Varies by refurbished seller |
Apple specifications for the M6 and 2024 M4 generations. Configure-to-order and refurbished listings can differ from these base models.
The enclosure and basic port layout remain familiar: two front USB-C ports, HDMI and three rear Thunderbolt 4 ports on these base models. Wi-Fi 7 and 2.5Gb Ethernet are real M6 upgrades, but they help most when your router or wired network can use them. The M5 Pro mini is a different comparison: it has Thunderbolt 5 and a much higher starting price.
Four Checks Before Buying the Refurbished M4
Match the configuration
A 256GB M4 is not a bargain against a 512GB M6 without accounting for storage. Confirm memory, SSD and Ethernet option in the listing.
Read the condition label
Refurbished, renewed, open-box and used are different promises. Check who inspected the unit and what cosmetic or functional standards apply.
Price the protection
Compare written warranty and return terms, not just the headline discount. Include shipping and any restocking fee in your total.
Check availability now
An old low price on an out-of-stock page is not an offer. Open the retailer listing and confirm the current unit and delivery estimate.
Which One Should You Buy?
Choose the M6 if you want the current chip, stronger networking, a new-unit purchase, or specific work that benefits from Apple's claimed gains. Choose a properly described refurbished M4 if your tasks are ordinary and the like-for-like saving is large enough to cover the older hardware and seller terms. For most buyers, a $100 difference is too small; $200 or more is where we would examine the refurbished listing closely.
Start with current M6 offers and the refurbished catalog, then verify the final price and condition at the retailer. For the other desktop configurations, see our Mac mini and Mac Studio launch guide.
