Apple Watch Ultra 4 vs Ultra 3: Is 8 More Hours Enough?
Ultra 4 keeps the $799 price and attacks the one spec Ultra buyers care about most: time away from a charger. The everyday rating climbs from 42 to 50 hours, Low Power Mode moves from 72 to 84, and a new Health Sensing System adds recovery context.

Ultra 4 is the better buy at equal prices. Ultra 3 owners should upgrade only if the extra battery crosses a real trip or race threshold. Everyone else should keep the watch—or buy Ultra 3 after a verified $150-plus discount.

Eight Hours Can Be Huge—or Meaningless
The eight-hour gain applies to Apple's everyday-use test. It is about a 19% increase over the Ultra 3 rating. The 12-hour Low Power Mode gain is about 17%. These describe two different operating modes, and neither proves eight or twelve extra hours of continuous race tracking. That distinction matters if endurance is your reason for buying.
For a work trip, extra everyday margin can be valuable even if you never exercise for more than an hour. A missed charging opportunity is less disruptive when the watch has reserve. For someone who reliably charges every night, the same reserve may rarely change the day. Both people can reasonably reach different conclusions from the same chart.
An older Ultra's worn battery introduces another variable. Comparing your current depleted battery with a new Ultra 4 combines battery restoration and a generational improvement. Obtain a service estimate if endurance is your only complaint. Replacing the battery in an otherwise satisfactory watch may solve the practical problem at a lower cost.
The 45-Hour Headline Has a Settings Tradeoff
Apple describes two extended workout modes. Extended Workout is rated for up to 25 hours with GPS and heart-rate readings, using Low Power Mode and omitting running-form metrics. Max Extended Workout reaches up to 45 hours for outdoor runs, walks, and hikes, while also disabling alerts, splits, and certain metrics. Apple's test notes describe testing without an iPhone during Outdoor Run sessions. These are specialized endurance settings, not a promise that all features run for 45 hours.
That tradeoff may suit a long hike where a recorded route and duration matter more than detailed training feedback. It may be less suitable if you depend on alerts and splits to execute a race plan. Before buying for a particular event, identify which functions you need throughout it, then evaluate the battery mode that preserves those functions.
Do not plan to finish exactly at a laboratory limit. Weather, signal conditions, screen interaction, and additional use can change endurance. We would want a field test with the same settings, workout type, and approximate duration as your intended activity. The percentage in the everyday chart is not a substitute for that evidence.
Charging is the other half of the story: Apple claims up to 18 hours of additional use from 15 minutes on the charger. For a traveler who can recharge briefly at breakfast, that may be more convenient than stretching every setting for another night. It is an additional-use claim under test conditions, not a full-charge time. The Ultra 4 specifications should be checked alongside the announcement's workout footnotes.
More Health Context, but Not Every Feature Is New Hardware
The new Health Sensing System and readiness score create a second reason to consider Ultra 4. For someone already reviewing training load, sleep, and recovery information, bringing those signals together could make the watch more useful between workouts. The benefit is less obvious if you only start a workout, stop it, and never review the data.
Judge readiness by the explanation underneath the score. Does it help you understand a change in your routine? Does the information remain useful over several weeks? More frequent measurements and an attractive daily score are not the same as independently demonstrated improvements in health or performance. We have not tested those outcomes, and the feature should be treated as context rather than a medical assessment.
Ultra 3 already brought satellite communications to the Ultra family. Buying Ultra 4 is therefore not the only way to get that capability. Likewise, software announced with a new watch can have its own compatibility rules. Confirm exactly which feature is missing from your current model before assigning it value in the upgrade calculation.
Apple also describes some Audio Intelligence and redesigned Health app features as arriving later this year. Those should not be counted as available at hardware launch. If a future feature is your main reason to buy, wait until its availability, requirements, and usefulness can be assessed on the released software.
The Harder Comparison May Be Series 12
At $399 to start, Series 12 offers the same new sensing platform and readiness feature for $400 less than Ultra 4. These are entry prices, not identical configurations, but the gap is large enough to ask what you want from the Ultra case, controls, and endurance. Better health context alone does not require choosing the most expensive Watch family.
Fit can reverse an otherwise obvious specification decision. A larger watch that feels fine for a one-hour workout may be less pleasant for sleep or under a shirt cuff. Try it while bending your wrist, typing, and wearing your preferred band. If extra size causes you to remove it frequently, a smaller watch you wear consistently may serve you better.
We favor Ultra when its physical format or endurance solves a recurring need. For an office day, ordinary workouts, and reliable daily charging, start with our Series 12 comparison. Spending less is a valid choice even when the larger model wins the battery chart.
When Ultra 3 Becomes the Better Purchase
Our suggested threshold is at least $150 below Ultra 4 for a comparable new Ultra 3. That would put a qualifying offer at $649 or less against the $799 launch price, saving roughly 19%. It is a target to evaluate future offers, not a live price claim. A buyer who has no use for the additional endurance or new sensing can reasonably prioritize that saving.
For a used or refurbished watch, price alone is insufficient. Battery condition, seller coverage, activation status, included band, and the return window affect the value. A low sticker price loses appeal if the watch immediately needs battery service or cannot be returned after a fit problem.
Existing Ultra 3 owners face a different decision: their watch costs nothing further to keep. We would replace it only for a specific improvement worth the net upgrade expense. New buyers choosing between two similarly priced watches should favor Ultra 4; satisfied owners can wait for a larger change.
