MacBook Pro M5 vs M4 Pro: Is the Upgrade Worth It for Creators?
The M5-generation MacBook Pro is here, which makes the previous M4 Pro a serious value for video editors, developers, and 3D artists. Here's what actually changed, and when the new chips are worth it versus buying last year's Pro at a discount.
Apple's pro laptop kept its winning formula and dropped in the new silicon: the M5, M5 Pro, and M5 Max. The familiar Liquid Retina XDR displays and chassis remain, but chip tiers matter: base M5 has 16GB starting memory and Thunderbolt 4; M5 Pro/Max add Thunderbolt 5 and N1 wireless with Wi-Fi 7/Bluetooth 6. M5 and M5 Pro now start at 1TB storage; M5 Max starts at 2TB. For sustained pro work, that's where the gains land.
Compare the base M5 against M4 Pro separately from M5 Pro against M4 Pro. A newer base chip is not automatically a faster substitute for an older Pro chip; CPU core count, memory bandwidth, GPU resources, and the actual task decide. The base M5 has 153GB/s memory bandwidth; M4 Pro has 273GB/s, and M5 Pro has 307GB/s. M5 Max reaches 460GB/s or 614GB/s depending on GPU configuration. That explains why this comparison must use exact chip tiers instead of treating every M5 MacBook Pro as the same machine.
Where the M5 Generation Pulls Ahead
Video editing
M5 Pro and Max offer newer GPU resources and substantial memory headroom, but an export can be limited by codec, effects, CPU work, or storage. Test a representative project in your editor; do not assume a base M5 beats M4 Pro in every 4K or 8K workflow.
3D, rendering & AI
GPU-bound work such as Blender rendering and local AI can benefit from the M5 GPU architecture and higher Pro/Max bandwidth. Gains vary by software, scene, model, and memory capacity. This is the clearest reason to choose the new generation.
Development
Large Xcode builds, containers, and local LLMs benefit from the extra cores and bandwidth, but for most developers an M4 Pro is already more than fast enough, making it a smart value buy.
What did not change
The Liquid Retina XDR screen, keyboard, SDXC, HDMI, and MagSafe remain strong reasons to buy an M4 Pro. Battery ratings differ by size and chip. The current Pro/Max models also add newer wireless, so the complete specification list is not identical.
Which One Should You Buy?
✅ Buy the M5 generation if…
You earn a living on this machine and time is money: faster exports, renders, and AI work pay for themselves. Choose M5 Pro for serious editing/dev, M5 Max for heavy 3D, color, and large local AI models.
✅ Buy a discounted M4 Pro if…
You want pro-grade power at the best price. With the M5 out, M4 Pro/Max machines are appearing certified refurbished and discounted, often hundreds below the M5, with the same display and ports.
❌ Don't upgrade M4 Pro → M5 if…
You bought an M4 Pro/Max recently and it's keeping up with your work. The generational gain is real but rarely worth a full re-buy after a single cycle.
