Stronger Open-Ear ANC Still Depends on the Ear

Apple's claim is up to 50% more external noise removed compared with AirPods 4 with ANC. The graphic is an illustration of that relative claim. It is not a decibel plot, a promise of 50% less perceived loudness, or evidence that these cancel as much noise as a sealed in-ear model. Different noises and different ears can produce different results.

That matters because people choose open-ear AirPods partly to avoid silicone tips and an in-ear seal. Comfort can make them preferable for a long desk session even if a sealed alternative isolates more effectively. If the fit of AirPods 4 already works well for you, stronger ANC is a promising improvement. If they move around or feel insecure, a generation change is not enough reason to assume the problem has been solved.

A useful listening test should include the sounds you want to reduce: train or aircraft rumble, office chatter, and the noise near your usual workspace. Evaluate music at the same level and try the listening modes separately. One successful demonstration against a steady noise does not establish how well the earbuds handle voices or wind.

Apple also describes changes to acoustic design and Adaptive EQ. We would not turn those into a sound-quality verdict without listening. Bass balance, vocal clarity, call microphones, and comfort deserve separate assessment. Better cancellation can make music easier to hear, but it does not tell us whether you will prefer the tuning.

The $129 Model Does Not Get the Extra Hour

Apple's technical specifications rate the standard AirPods 5 at four hours with ANC enabled and 20 hours including recharges from the case. The wireless-case version is rated at five hours and 22 hours respectively. The extra hour therefore belongs specifically to the $149 version. Our earlier copy was too broad on this point.

Case-inclusive endurance is not uninterrupted listening time. The earbuds must return to the case to recharge. For a long meeting or flight, the per-charge figure is the relevant constraint; for several short sessions spread across a week, the total with the case can matter more. Neither figure should be treated as a guarantee under every combination of volume, calls, and features.

Five versus four hours is a 25% increase in rated listening time. An extra hour is particularly useful if your normal session falls near the older model's limit. If you rarely listen for more than an hour at a time, both versions may fit your routine comfortably. What the Extra $20 Actually Buys

Spend $20 more and you get wireless charging, volume swipe, and the longer battery rating. It is misleading to call this only a case upgrade: the earbuds themselves differ too. Do not assume that purchasing a wireless case later would add the other capabilities to the $129 earbuds.

Volume swipe has a straightforward benefit when your phone is in a bag or you want to change the level discreetly. Wireless charging matters if you already have a compatible pad or Apple Watch charger in a convenient place. If neither describes your routine, the extra listening time may still justify the premium. Over two years, $20 is roughly 83 cents a month, although it is paid as part of the purchase.

The $129 version remains a reasonable choice for short commutes, occasional calls, and buyers with a firm spending limit. It should not be dismissed simply because a more capable version exists. Our preference for the $149 model assumes the added $20 is comfortable in your budget and at least one of its everyday conveniences will be used.

Siri and Translation Start with Your iPhone

The launch announcement ties Siri AI to an Apple Intelligence-supported iPhone and the iOS 27 beta rollout. Buying the earbuds does not make an incompatible phone support those features. Live Translation similarly requires the appropriate software, language setup, and downloads. Check the feature you want in your region before giving it weight in the purchase.

We removed the earlier table entry marking Siri AI as unavailable on AirPods 4 ANC. The new-product announcement alone does not establish that exclusion. It also does not support treating every software feature highlighted for AirPods 5 as exclusive to this generation. The firm hardware differences here are the acoustic changes, model-specific battery ratings, controls, and charging options.

If you use another brand of phone or an older Apple device, assess AirPods as headphones first. Some Apple ecosystem functions may be limited even though Bluetooth audio works. A promise about intelligent assistance should not outweigh fit, listening quality, and battery life that you can actually use.

AirPods 4 Owners Should Be More Patient Than New Buyers

For a new buyer, the lower launch prices make AirPods 5 attractive. For someone whose AirPods 4 ANC still fit comfortably, sound good, and last through their sessions, replacing them costs the full new purchase price. A lower price than the old launch price does not make an upgrade free. Wait for a reliable comparison of the cancellation and microphones in the environments you care about.

Clearance offers deserve a fair comparison too. AirPods 4 ANC already includes wireless charging, so a small discount below $129 is not the only possible value case. Compare it primarily with the $149 version if wireless charging matters, while accounting for the older controls, shorter battery rating, and claimed ANC improvement. At a similar price, we would choose the newer model.

When considering a used pair, verify condition, seller credibility, return terms, and how long the batteries last now. Hygiene and battery wear matter more for earbuds than a clean product photo suggests. If your main complaint is outside noise and you tolerate silicone tips, include the Pro family in the comparison rather than assuming open-ear AirPods 5 is the only upgrade path.
