Used Mac Mini M4: What to Pay & Where to Buy

The M4 is now a previous-generation Mac mini. It can still make a useful used or refurbished desktop, but a new M6 starts at $899. The older machine needs a real saving, not just a lower price than its discontinued MSRP.

- •512GB gives useful internal headroom. Confirm memory separately; storage capacity does not identify the RAM configuration.

Used and refurbished prices move constantly. As an editorial decision threshold, around $699 for a basic 16GB/256GB M4 with strong protection saves $200 against the $899 new M6. Around $750 or above, we would usually choose M6 instead. A 512GB or higher-memory listing needs a like-for-use comparison; these are not live offers.

Private-party used (marketplace, eBay) may cost less, but protection varies and there may be no seller warranty. Verify the machine and payment protections yourself.

What to Check on a Used Mac Mini
- •Exact chip, unified memory and internal storage. Memory is not user-upgradable; plan internal capacity upfront or use external storage.
- •Complete internet-connected setup without the previous owner’s Activation Lock or an organization’s Remote Management enrollment.
- •Compare About This Mac and System Information with the invoice. Apple's coverage lookup checks coverage, not authenticity or ownership.
- •All ports work and the original power cable is included.
